Below is an excerpt from ISS ESG’s thought leadership paper “In Focus: Oil, Gas & Consumable Fuels.” The full paper is available for download from the Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) online library.
The Oil, Gas & Consumable Fuels (OG&CF) industry covers companies mainly involved in the production, transport or processing of raw materials whose principal end goal is energy generation, that is coal, oil, gas, uranium, and biofuels. Many companies also produce petrochemicals or other side products.
As the world economy runs on energy, the sector contributes to improving the lives of and generating wealth for many. However, it is also a main contributor to environmental issues such as climate change and pollution of ecosystems, as well as social issues such as human rights violations and hazardous safety conditions for workers. In order to ascertain to what degree the OG&CF industry is prepared for the transition to a low-carbon economy, it is crucial to examine how the companies address these issues.
